Debunking Composting Myths

Myth 1: Composting is difficult!

Debunked: Composting is a generally simple process and can even be very efficient, depending on your chosen method. Composting processes can be approached in a variety of ways - you can even make compost by simply layering kitchen scraps and dried leaves.

Myth 2: Composting attracts rodents!

Debunked: Although cold composting can attract rodents and insects, you can also compost with enclosed containers. I recommend going to our “Methods Of Composting” page to see which composting method is right for you.

Myth 2: Composting attracts rodents!

Debunked: Although compost can be smelly, there are many remedies to this. Odorous piles are formed usually due to excessive amounts of moisture and/or nitrogen (ie. thick layers of grass clippings.) This issue can be resolved via adding carbon (like leaves and newspaper) or turning over your compost pile, allowing additional air circulation.

Note: This may also be due to the inclusion of meats, fats, or dairy products (which are usually non-compostable) to your compost pile.

Myth 4: Composting requires a lot of space.

Debunked: There are many different but effective ways to compost! For example, you can try out “countertop composting” if you live in an apartment. Vermicomposting (also known as “worm composting”) is also able to be done indoors. Purchasing automatically heating and aerating electric composters are also great options.
